Chocolate Fondue

I love nights out with my girlfriends, whether it is about tossing tequila or drinking the bloody Marys to celebrate something, I just cannot wait for the once-per-month rendezvous that we usually organize. However, I have realized that there is always a price to pay for the nights out. If I am not nursing a head killing hangover, then I am trying to remember the things that I said when I was tipsy, and how many ex-boyfriends I called to see whether they missed me. But hey, that is what life is all about no? I have realized that even something as innocent as taking a chocolate fondue with my girlfriend has its repercussions. When I stained my lovely Willie Nelson t-shirt, I tried getting rid of the chocolate stain to no avail.

That is why I went to my friend to look for the best tips for cleaning such stains and here is what she told me:

Be patient, very

Take your time to treat a stain. It will not come off as fast as you would like. In fact, you may have to take the garment through a few stages of cleaning, that is, pre-cleaning, soaking, cleaning and rinsing, all to get rid of the stain. So get a good cleaning product and apply it directly on the stain, then wait some time before you attempt to clean it. Chocolate is stubborn, give it time.

Clean it out as soon as you discover it

That is right – the moment you spill chocolate on your clothes, you should clean it out. If you are not in a position to clean it, scrape out the excess chocolate because it can spread, making the stain bigger than it should be.

Take the stain under cold water and flush it out. Oops, this may not be possible as it may mean you having to get out of your t-shirt, or dress, and you sure do not want to do that at a party. But if it is at home, you should take the stain to running water immediately and run it through and through.

You should also use an organic laundry or dishwashing detergent to clean the stain. Just use a little. But make sure to rub it in such that it penetrates to the interior of the garment. Some detergents are made with special additives that remove stubborn stains.

After that, soak the garment in water for about 15 minutes and after every so long, rub the stained part. If you need to add some more detergent, just do it. There is no harm.

Once the stain is gone, clean your garment in a cleaning machine. A cycle and it should be totally free of the stain and if it is still there, repeat the entire process until it is gone.

The above tips are for a washable garment like polyester. However, you may need more care for garments made of cotton, silk or other non-washable fabrics. Scrape the chocolate stain, use cold water on the stained part and place a towel under the stain so that it does not spread to the other side. If you are not confident about cleaning your non-washable garment, take it to a dry cleaner.
